Scala’s – San Francisco, CA (NoshDC on the Road)

San Francisco

January 2014

Scala’s is the in house restaurant of the Sir Francis Drake hotel at union square. I enjoyed breakfast several times while staying at this Kimpton property.  This was my first stay at a Kimpton property but not my first meal at one. Read more about my stay at this hotel here.

Scala’s – San Francisco

Two of my favorite Kimpton property eats here in DC are Urbana and Poste. It appears there’s a trend here as I give them 3 for 3 so far, all very good.

Scala’s is Italian and  has a very intimate feel with warm colors and  what I call ‘mood’ lighting.  Even at 8 in the morning it felt like 3pm. The lighting is kept very dim. I imagined it may have looked this way when gas lighting was used…..I thought it was very charming.

So here’s what I’d personally recommend. First the oatmeal, it was outstanding. It came with  bananas just like I always add myself and a large sectioned date atop  the creme brûlée like crust. It was simply perfect.

The brioche french toast were very light with  sautéed pears and fresh cream again, perfection. This dish is large enough to share but you won’t want to!  The basics did not disappoint either and I can’t imagine where you could possibly go wrong from this menu.

There are so many choices for breakfast in San Francisco and you if you are staying at the Drake you may be tempted to go elsewhere. I’d recommend if you have more than one day in the city you may want to save a trip and head down to the lobby to Scala’s.
