Ambar – Brunch

523 8th Street SE

This Columbus Day got a call from my friend PJ to grab a bite. It was the holiday and Ambar was serving brunch so we decided to check it out. Normally brunch is on Saturdays and Sundays only.

Ambar is fairly new to DC having opened less about 8  months ago. They have the ‘small plate’ theme which normally I am not a big fan for but in this case they have a pretty good deal. For brunch you have a fixed price for as many plates as you like and add in bottomless mimosa for $35 bucks. This is a pretty good deal especially since the food was very good.

The venue has a nice dining area downstairs and about 4 tables outdoors in the front. I didn’t get a chance to peek upstairs but did notice that this would be another option. The servers seemed to be very attentive in the dining room making sure to keep the plates coming.

We decided not to go with the all-you-can-eat scenario so PJ ordered the Steak and Eggs while I got Waffles and the Salmon Omelet.

I tried the steak and while not as tender as I’d like was very flavorful and the chips seemed like they were made in house.

The waffles looked delicious so I was very excited when they landed on the table but they didn’t have any warm syrup….they didnt even have any cold syrup and I tried to enjoy a  fork full but it was just too bland without the syrup for me. The strawberries were very fresh but there was no kind of ‘waffle magic’ drizzled on the waffle so I had to return the dish because not very tasteful for me. Having said this I gotta say this was a personal preference because the waffles were perfectly fine if you prefer your waffles neat. The only waffles I can eat that way are the type like Roscoes out in LA or actually Founding Farmers where they have a hint of cinnamon.

Now the Salmon omelet was outstanding. Eggs prepared just right and you could taste how fresh the ingredients were. Capers, Salmon, Spinach, Onions and Cream Cheese, really outstanding. This was a rather quick meal for us as but I am planning to return for dinner very soon.

Ambar is located on the ever expanding 8th Street aka Barracks Row near Eastern Market. Its about a 7 minute walk from the Eastern Market metro blue or orange line. Parking is becoming more and more challenging in this area so you may want to consider taking metro.
